Commuting
How long does it actually take?
Every building page on this site gives a door-to-platform time. It is two measured numbers added together and nothing else, and this page is what they are and what they leave out.
What the number is
The walk is routed along real streets from the building's own parcel to the station entrance, not measured in a straight line. On a phone map it is the figure you would get walking at an ordinary pace.
The ride is the scheduled run time between those two stations in PATH's published timetable.
The station is whichever one gets you there soonest, which is not always the nearest. From Paulus Hook, Exchange Place is a seven minute walk and Grove Street is fourteen, but Exchange Place has no Midtown train at all, so for Midtown the answer is the longer walk.
What the number is not
- It does not include waiting for a train. We show how often trains ran instead, so you can add that yourself rather than have us average it for you.
- It does not include the walk at the other end. World Trade Center to Wall Street is another eight minutes on foot. 33rd Street to Bryant Park is five.
- It does not include delays, weekend track work or a signal problem at Grove Street. No published number does.
- It is not a door-to-door time. It is door to platform.
Across the whole area
For the 245 buildings on this site, the door-to-platform time to Lower Manhattan runs from 9 to 32 minutes, and to Midtown from 17 to 40 minutes. The spread is almost entirely the walk: the ride barely varies.
Quickest to Lower Manhattan
Quickest to Midtown
These are not a ranking of buildings. They are a ranking of walks, and the walk is the only part that changes.
The three stations, and where each one goes
Downtown has three PATH stations. They are not interchangeable, and which one you live near decides more about your commute than anything else on a building page.
Exchange Place
No train from Exchange Place goes to Midtown. You change at Grove Street, at Newport or at Hoboken, or you walk to one of them.
Grove Street
Newport
The other ways across
The ferry
NY Waterway runs from Paulus Hook to Manhattan. It is the only ferry terminal downtown: there is none at Newport and the Harborside slip no longer runs a scheduled service. It is faster to Midtown than PATH and several times the price. We do not quote a fare, for the reason given in the newcomer's guide.
The light rail
The Hudson-Bergen Light Rail does not cross the river. It is how you reach Hoboken Terminal for NJ Transit, and how you move north and south within Jersey City. Every building page gives the walk to its two nearest stops.
Driving
The Holland Tunnel is at the edge of this area. We do not publish a driving time, because the figure that matters is the queue, and nobody publishes that in a form we could reproduce.
Where the ride times come from, and the problem with them
The Port Authority publishes PATH's timetable as a data file. We read the run times and the morning frequencies straight out of it, and we keep a copy of the exact file so every number here can be checked against the same source.
That file has lapsed. It was published on 22 May 2025 and its own calendar ran out on 1 June 2026. We cannot find a newer machine-readable PATH timetable anywhere: the national transit database's current copy is the same file, and the Port Authority's old developer page is gone.
So the run times here are PATH's most recent published schedule, not a promise about this week. A run time between two stations is close to a fact about the track and changes very little. How often a train comes is a decision the Port Authority revisits, so treat the frequency as what that timetable ran rather than what runs today. PATH's own schedules and live arrivals are the thing to check before you rely on it.
Timetable: the Port Authority's PATH feed, published 22 May 2025, valid 22 May 2025 to 1 June 2026, service "Year Round Starting 3/16/2025 (Weekday)". Our copy is kept at inputs/transit/path-gtfs-2025-05-22.zip. Run times are the median scheduled run across every weekday trip. Frequency is the median gap between departures 08:00 to 09:00 on a weekday. Walking times are routed with Valhalla on OpenStreetMap data. Checked 2026-10-16.
A weekly note about downtown
One email a week: what changed downtown, what opened, what is being built, and which buildings we have added. No spam, and you can leave at any time.
