pointplotDowntown Jersey City, building by building

Corrections

Tell us we're wrong

A lot of what is on this site comes from public records, and public records are wrong more often than you would expect.

Things we already know are uncertain

Every building page has a line at the bottom listing what we are still checking on that page. We would rather show you the gaps than pretend they are not there.

Some of what we have already run into:

  • Jersey City's own records disagree with developers' own announcements about how many homes a building has, and when it was built.
  • A large building often sits on several tax lots, and no public source says which lots make up which building.
  • Two buildings in Newport had each other's addresses in our list until we caught it.
  • One building we had on Grand Street is actually on Brook Street.

What to tell us

If a fact is wrong, tell us which building, which fact, and, if you have one, where the right answer comes from. You do not need a source. "I live here and there are 230 apartments, not 527" is useful on its own; we will go and check.

What we do

  1. We check it against the public record.
  2. If you are right, we fix it and note on the page that it changed.
  3. If the record disagrees with you, we show both and say they disagree. We do not quietly pick one.
  4. If we cannot settle it, we take the claim off the page rather than leave something up we are not sure of.

We do not take things down because someone dislikes them

If a fact is sourced and correct, we will not remove it because a building's management would prefer it were not there. If it is wrong, we will remove it within a day of finding out, whoever asks.
